Why I started Ingenuity Learning
I help learning leaders and training industry professionals harness the potential of generative AI, transforming the way they create, deliver, and measure learning experiences.
In 2023, just as generative AI was beginning to enter mainstream consciousness, someone asked me what I thought about using AI for training. I had to confess that I hadn’t thought much about it. My impression was that it wasn’t ready for prime time.
Bothered that I couldn’t answer this obvious question, I decided to give AI a spin for a few weeks, thinking that it would confirm my suspicions. That is not how it played out.
The results from my early experimentation with generative AI were both eye-opening and bewildering. AI was certainly not just hype. I was able to use AI to streamline content development, personalize learning experiences, and enhance training operations in ways I hadn’t thought possible. Tasks that previously took days could be done in hours.
However, for every successful experiment, there were many problematic ones where AI couldn’t do things that seemed simple. AI output was frequently inconsistent, generic, contained factual errors, or was easily recognizable as AI-generated. I discovered that it’s easy to get mediocre, hit-and-miss results from AI. However, getting results good enough to build a professional training program around is another story.
Convinced of AI’s promise, I became determined to crack the code—to figure out how to use generative AI effectively in real-world training scenarios. Over literally thousands of hours of research and hands-on experimentation, I discovered that using AI for training requires careful strategy, effective prompting techniques, workflows tied to learning practices, a wide range of tools, and an understanding of how AI works.
My lengthy learning journey revealed a clear need in the training industry. There is a glut of information available about AI. However, most of it is either too superficial, too technical, or too full of hype to meet the needs of training professionals. There is little practical guidance available on AI strategy or applying AI to real-world training challenges. I created Ingenuity Learning to change that.
I hope you find the Ingenuity Learning website a valuable resource. I also hope you will share your own AI success stories and learning experiences so we can thoughtfully shape the future of AI in the training industry together.
