Illuminate turns technical documents into podcasts

Jun 9, 2024

Quick summary

An experimental project from Google shows how AI can turn complex documents into a podcast that makes the information easier to understand.

Why it matters

If you survey learners about their learning format preferences, you’re likely to find that there isn’t a consensus. Some learners may prefer text documents because they are easier to skim and thus quicker. Others may prefer audio or video because it’s more accessible. Still others might find interactive e-learning more engaging and helpful.

It’s rare that training teams have the luxury of generating multiple formats for the same content. But AI could change that. The experimental Illuminate project takes complicated technical documents and turns them into podcasts that explain the concepts in a simpler way. While the Illuminate model is targeted at research papers, the technique has potential to be used more broadly.

To get a sense for its potential, check out the “podcast” based on the abstract of the seminal paper that launched generative AI as we know it, Attention is All You Need, on the Illuminate home page.
